Clay Face
Honolulu, Hawaii
Old Virginia (Asylum) sweet brightleaf
Shave 13 ・ 113 g left

PRESENTATION Old Virginia came in a small tin can that tended to rust in my salty climate after only a few months. The lid was very tight and tended to stick. So, I transferred the soap to a wood bowl, where it seemed much happier, and where there was more room for loading.

SCENT Prominent notes are tobacco absolute, vanilla, and tonka bean with a whisper of oakmoss and cedar. This is the closest rendition of bright leaf tobacco I’ve ever smelled. It reminds me of the strong aroma of the tobacco warehouses in Durham, North Carolina, on a warm summer afternoon.

LATHER I’ve had this soap several years, and it’s grown softer and softer, until now it’s nearly a croap. Today I loaded with a boar brush using the Marco method (very wet brush) and came away with surprisingly frugal amount of fragrant lather. However, the cushion was good and so was the slip, and I was satisfied with the shave.

THE UPSHOT I liked this soap so much I bought two tins and mashed them together into one big bowl. The dense slippery lather could easily beckon me every morning, and though I don’t use tobacco, the scent of flue-cured bright leaf brings back happy memories of my days in NC.

Divine uplifting scent. Subpar lubrication and cushion (I loaded heavily by my standards with 50+ swirls). Good news is I'll always be willing to overlook such shortfalls due to how much I enjoy the scent.[Image: f52145b759130217caf17cdd4c5daff7.jpg]
