What soap/cream did you use today?

Well, I done went and did it and man am I happy.  Chiseled Face Loyal reminds me of a dog that moved in with me.  My Golden was named Buddy.  He was a beautiful; no gorgeous retriever.  He was what other Golden Retrievers wished they were.  That’s not the dog  I’m thinking about.  Beautiful Buddy and I would hit the road every morning, rain or shine, at Oh-dark-thirty, and put in 4 to 5 miles.  There was a great hike over around the neighbors alfalfa field that we both liked.  One morning an obviously homeless, hobo dog of Labrador persuasion decided to tag along.  He was a ragged but good boy so we let him come.  Man that yellow dude taught my well-mannered pooch some things.  He taught my Buddy how to dive nose first into meadow vole holes and dig like mad.  It was funny to watch but soon enough it was time to hike home.  Big yellow tagged along.  I told my kids not to feed the curr and thought no more of it.  Next morning at walk time we emerged from the house to find Mr. Mange on the front lawn wagging his tail and woofing as though to say “what took you guys so long”?  We hiked, the goofed, we went home.  Next morning, no yellow dog……but that was the last morning the beast wasn’t there.  It was like he had to hike down to the bridge he was living under, gather his stuff in a shopping cart, and move it back to my place.  Before two days were over my kids had named him Hal and were feeding him.  And Hal became a fixture, and then a legend at our home.  He had a sunburnt nose, a crooked tail, worn teeth, and a paunch that belied his homeless status.  That dude could forage like nobodies business!  He’d met a skunk in the not too distant past and reeked.  Took two baths and a whole bottle of Fabreeze to get him out of the “retch” category.  This dog blew hair like a farm cat in a fan belt!  He broke wind all the time and it smelled like he was feasting on a winter killed Bison.  But boy was he loyal.  I’ve had a lot of dogs in my life.  Really great dogs.  But I’ve never seen a dog do,his,work like Hal.  That dude took care of my kids like nobodies business.  He whipped a pit bull that wanted to chase one of my kids down.  Years later I was up on the Great Divide Bowhunting elk when my wife called and said they had to put old Hal down. I sat on a blown down Douglas fir and sobbed.  He wasn’t young when he moved in with us, and his joints just got worse and worse until he just couldn’t climb the stairs without crying.  Ol Hal!  He looked like Gary Busey after a three day bender but man was he loyal.  Sort of like this Loyal soap.  It’s a glorious stinker that lasts on my skin like an aftershave.  Leather, coffee, dirt, and oh so good.  It’s dirty, gritty, and so smooth.

I’ve long been curious about  Mike. In spite of his well-known soap, the man himself is Delphic. Unlike most soapers, Mike doesn’t appear in the forums or do interviews with the Sharpologist. Luckily his own Spartan Web site does offer a few clues. So what do we know about him? Like most of us, Mike undertook his wet shaving odyssey in order to find a better way to shave. Fed up with carts, he prowled the shaving forums in search of more comfortable alternatives. He tried out lots of soaps and creams (sound familiar?), and after a little reverse engineering and some more online study, he tried his hand at making his own shaving soap. The results have become legendary. This is still one of the best soaps in my stable. And most remarkable,  he seems to have hit the bullseye with his first shot. In all these years, Mike has stuck with one base. Incredible. He calls soaping a hobby, suggesting he has a day job, but what that may be is anyone’s guess. I seem to remember, several years back, that he was studying Greek and Latin. So, maybe he’s a philologist by day and a mad soaper by night. If so, he’s got a good gig going.

Bergamote 22 isn’t bergamot. There’s some orange and some grapefruit in it, probably some jasmine too, but I have no idea what the other 19 ingredients are. Sort of smells like Azemour les Oranges or Dyptique's L'eau des Hesperides but without the pleasant creaminess that makes those fragrances interesting.
