What soap/cream did you use today?

Some soaps seem to get harder the more you use them. For instance, Klar’s Lemongrass started out a good loader, but eventually it got so rock hard, I couldn’t load from the puck anymore, even after soaking it. I gave it to Mrs Bouki to use as a hand soap. She messed with it about a week and then chucked it, saying it wouldn’t lather for her either. On B&B’s 3017 thread I’ve read of something similar happening to D.R. Harris soaps. With each shave more effort is required to load a brush. Now I’m finding that this King of Oud is also taking more and more swirlage to get a full load. I may have to put my brush down. Instead, I’ll take up a spatula to scrape a dose off the puck into a loading bowl. That works, but it's not my preferred method, and it's puzzling how a well-used soap seems to seize up. Ideas?

Hello my friend

I've had old soaps do that also but not many over the years but maybe try a different brush. I recently tried that with a old Shave Soap I haven't used in a very long time and same thing you experienced, It wasn't lathering up as I remember is doing when it I was using it regularly and I tried using a boar with it and it was a bingo for me. Lathered up just fine. Just a suggestion. BTW I've had that happen with some bath bar soaps as well. I may have to look into why that could be an issue from a technical standpoint.

Trying grinding into flakes then recompressing but not too compact

Bouki, if you're in a humid environment, the upper layer of soap could have more moisture in it (softer and more loadable)... Then if you've loaded that off from recent shaves, you would be left with the firmer/drier stuff below.

Also, if in a warm environment, I suppose it could semi-melt and the lighter oils could separate and float above the rest. Some strata could be firmer than others.

Has happened to me with Haslinger. As Dan recommended, regrate, compress lightly. Should be good to go
