There is such a thing as natural oud oil, but it costs a fortune. We’re talking thousands of dollars per kilo. At that price, it’s not likely that any of the real stuff finds its way into most of our “oud” shaving soaps. Instead our artisans use a blend of synthetic and natural ingredients to create an olfactory representation of what oud smells like.

Feel gipped? Don’t. Have you ever seen a picture of Van Gogh’s sunflowers. It’s beautiful. But how many real sunflowers have been mixed into the paint. None. So is it phony? Well, no, of course not. It’s simply a representation of what the artist saw. And sometimes it's possible that what the artist represents is even more appealing, and beautiful, and valuable than the original. In 1987 Van Gogh’s oil painting of a vase of sunflowers sold for forty million.

So, WK King of Oud smells like expensive sunflowers?  I'm so confused.

This poor soap is coming apart. It’s only five years old, but it’s lost its form. All the good oils have sunk to the bottom of the jar, while the top of the puck has gone soft and wispy on me like a cream. I can’t fault the scent. It’s still a brawny combination of cade, cedar, and cypress. And today’s lather was alright apart from some grainy bits that took a while to dissolve. But in the post shave department, something was clearly lacking. Looks like it’s time to get out the wire whisk and whip up some remediation.

Slowly.....I repeat slowly heat in microwave and whisk/mix then allow to cool and go solid again. Had to do a M&M soap once upon a time. You may already know all this though......
