Last two mornings have featured the same soap.  Stirling Orange Chill is not a glacial which I find too cold, but a great level of cool that really only gets wild with a cold water rinse.  Stirling performance is flawless and I suppose due to the lower price point and marketing style gets lower marks than some other perceived premiums.  I own or have owned several very expensive soaps but I appreciate Stirling more and more as the years pass.  Great shave these past two days.

It's more dried out now, but we had a massive rainstorm about a week ago and this juniper trunk broke and fell into the street. When it was still wet and the flesh was freshly exposed, it reminded me of this soap.

Just looking at the picture takes my nose back to time spent chopping out juniper posts off the hill in front of my boyhood home.

There’s a crown on the label that harkens back to the inspiration for this soap, Houbigant’s legendary Fougère Royale (Royal Fern). Launched in 1882, this was the first ‘fern’ fragrance, featuring a delicious accord of lavender, coumarin, and oakmoss. It was a manly outdoorsy scent, but at the same time it wasn’t offputting to women, pets, and children. Nowadays it may strike younger shavers as the typical ‘old man’ smell, but for the rest of us geezers, this is what shaving soap should smell like. Barrister & Mann have made a pretty good rendition of the modern version of Fougère Royale (2010). Very bright and clean, all Fern lacks is the classic fougère’s whiff of skank that’s played up so well in fragrances such as YSL Kouros. I’m not sure I miss it.

Now that's a beautiful sight! I just about used Vetiver de Haití today too. In terms of earthiness, it comes pretty close to Salter's infamous French Vetiver. They're both stinkers, but only in the very best of ways. How did you like it?

I’ll be honest when I first opened this up a few weeks ago I was unpleasantly surprised. I’m not sure what I was expecting (maybe more of a sweet tobacco/vanilla, even though reviews said It was different from all the other tobacco scents) but it has really grown on me. Everything is so subtle. I can’t wait for tomorrow to use it again!

Scent is nice, reminiscent of Greenfresh by Ethos. Under the new formula (d21) the lather is more stable, it stays hydrated a longer time allowing for a leisurely full pass without worrying that the emulsion might turn into a meringue-like crisp coating at any moment. For me the drawback lies in suboptimal slickness, especially residual. But with some improvement to the base TDS might just become an excellent shaving soap.
