Finished Annapurna at 2:00 a.m. last night. I had to see if those climbers would get down off the mountain alive even if it meant my missing out on a full night’s sleep. The last third held me spellbound. Frostbite, avalanches, exposure, and finally surgery without anesthetic – this was mountaineering in its most brutal form. The books starts off slow and jumbly, but now I see how the last hundred pages made it a bestseller. If you liked Joe Simpson's traumatic Touching the Void, you'll enjoy Annapurna too.

After that long night of harrowing adventure, this morning I decided to open up a tamer tale. This week’s good read is My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. Told through the eyes of a ten-year old, it’s the humorous story of a English family who moved to the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s. And this little pot of Le Petit Chypre, full of resins and mossy smells, should fit the bill perfectly.

A bit cooler today and all this talk of the Fine/AOS, so it was a good excuse. Flawless shave as always, I don't think I've used anything that feels so protective. I've always been a little iffy on the scent off this puck (unlike the balm or cologne), but much nicer when lathered.
