What soap/cream did you use today?

Several years ago my grand-daughter Morgan loved to pick up rocks that caught her fancy.  We would go on walks and she would spend significant time rock-hounding.  When we’d camp her pockets would bulge with treasure.  Her fascination with stones continues to this day but from the time She was from three to five it was an obsession.  As you’d assume, rocks with mica or pyrites, or other shiny inclusions were her choice and as a grandpa I knew that there would never be any destination or timeline to follow when wandering with Morgan.  Without fail, upon completion of the outing she would dig her rocks out of her pockets to examine them and ALWAYS would choose the prettiest and best rocks of the bunch to give to me.  I’d dutifully thank her and we’d chat about how unique and beautiful her rocks were and then I’d put her proffered gift in my pockets to redeposit them upon the ground at a moment when she wasn’t looking.  I assume her mom also recycled rocks and was not surprised when the washing machine made clunking noises.  After one walk-about with Morgan, and the inevitable sorting of the treasure, it struck me that this little lady was offering me everything she owned.  The best of the best.  And I just couldn’t throw the rocks away anymore.  When they were on the ground they were just a conglomeration of minerals but after they touched Morgans magic heart they became priceless and thus deserved a place of respect and honor.  I’m not ashamed to say that I have stashes of those rocks in three locations.  In my camp trailer I have a Tupperware container all sealed up on a shelf above my bed.  In my dresser I have a cedar box that holds treasures from when I was cleaning my pockets for laundry.  On my desk I have a dish made by my potter cousin and it corrals a double fistful of Morgans proffered gifts. I often spend time with these treasures remembering her quiet and high voice as we discussed what we’d found.  My bride thinks I’m ridiculous and sentimental for keeping them around and I know that if I leave before she does the rocks will be released to nature but while I still suck air they will remain my priceless treasure offered by a girl I love who had nothing else to give me.
Perhaps that same sort of longing for nostalgia is why I like the old-school soaps so much?  DR Harris Lavender is a sweet floral affair that offers top notch lather and a wonderfully nostalgic experience.  Just like Morgans rocks, Harris will always grace my bathroom as long as they don’t decide to manufacture soap that wont lather.

Today was Ethos Vanilla Safi….because just before I shaved I read that Frank Dragonsbeard announced that he is making another batch that will be available in November. So…I’m not rationing it anymore. It’s now in full rotation.

So that was a week with Ethos F-base soaps. DanLaw told me to prepare to be amazed, and in fact I was. I got my best lather with a synthetic brush, but a boar worked well too. The lather whipped up well on my face, and it whipped up well in my bowl; and although it came out rich, it didn't call for buckets of water to build a thick and slick emulsion. I had a great, close shave every day with only one spot of irritation (and that was probably because I was shaving for the first time with a new razor). The lathers smelled brilliant, handled menthol well, and washed away clean. The finish – plump but never greasy –  was some of the best. I used about one gram of soap each day, so the cost per shave lands entirely within the range of most artisan soaps. Do I have any gripes or grumbles? Nope. Not one. I’m amazed.
