What soap/cream did you use today?

L’Occitane has no business calling this cade. They know what that’s supposed to smell like – reeking with smoke and filled with sappy notes, cade is a dark, penetrating woody scent that’s certainly not for the light-hearted. But L’Occitane’s latest version of this Cade shaving cream is nothing like that. It’s just a breezy little confection made up of faint whiffs of cedar, apricot, and whipping cream. Not bad, but from an olfactory point of view, probably better suited for leg shavers. The lather isn't what I expected, either. It’s slick, that’s true, but it’s also thin, airy, and it dries fast. Now remarkably – and in spite of all these shortcomings – I got a really good shave today. Most of the credit, though, is due to the razor. The Rockwell 6S is a perfect combination of gentleness and efficiency. It works as well with the heavy lathers as it does with the wispy ones. Load it up with a Tatra Platinum blade (thanks for the tip, HoosierShave), and you’ve got the makings for an effortless shave.

Excelsior Base (We don't need no stinkin' Omnibus)

This scent is one of life's great small favors.  And, while this soap is now available in Omnibus, Excelsior works just fine for an excellent lather and shave.

The description Declaration offers for Darkfall may be spot on accurate but to me there is only roasting pinion nuts.  It’s such a wonderful scent for me that as this puck shrinks I’ll be looking for another.  With the fall mountain memories it only made sense to use the moose antler brush.  I cut it off a shed moose spoon I picked up while high in the Lemhi mountains.  

Ethos Nuage de Citron…yep…it’s indeed a cloud of lemon in scent and performance…

Barrister & Mann: Taiga, Omnibus base

Whew, great base great scent. Sits squarely in between Stirling's Coniferous and Evergreen Forest. Similar to Eleven's Blue Spruce.

Yes! Way back in 2015 I had a tube of the original Cade cream. It was fabulous. I used it all up within a few months, I loved it so much. But I'm sorry to write that things have changed considerably since then. The latest interpretation of Cade is only a poor pale reminder of its former glory. I'll finish this tube, but it may be used as a hand soap instead of as a shaving cream. I probably won't ever buy another unless at some point L'Occitane decides to put the cade back in their Cade.

Musgo Real Cream (Claus Porto) dirty barbershop

Claus Porto’s shaving creams are much richer than the others I’ve tried. They whip up into a heavy, dense lather that’s closely grained yet still slick. What I like most about them, though, is their oily feel. While other creams feel thin and watery, this Musgo Real feels well larded, like a superfatted shaving soap. The blade glides easily over the emulsion without catching the skin. Nice clean shave, no irritation.
