Original (Martin de Candre) rosemary, lavender, mint
Shave 5 ・ 97% left

It’s done. It took twenty days and fourteen different soaps to get me through The Three Musketeers, but at last the first volume of the adventures of D’Artagnan is fini. I’ll be honest, it’s not the most carefully written book, and the plot’s a bit of a mess from time to time, but I loved every one of its 639 action-packed pages. It wasn’t till the end, though, that I found a soap that went well with it. Turns out Martin de Candre’s Original is a really good soap for a thick swashbuckling read. The lather is always reliable and the simple herby scent doesn't get cloying shave after shave. Looks like after two fat tomes, I may be starting to get the hang of this Soap of the Book thing. What have I learned so far? Boldly scented soaps go best with thin books, while fat volumes need something that smells clean, green, and natural.

I tried something new today and gave this Saturnia soap just a smidgen of menthol.  As you know I really enjoy the scent of this soap with its sulphur note pointing to “hot springs”.  With the slight kiss of menthol though!  Wow, I was on a pair of skis, on the edge of a steaming springs.  The breeze pushing that odiferous cloud over the top of me and filling my lungs with the warm steam infused with sulfur.  But then the breeze changes direction, the cloud leaves, and I’m standing in the very brisk air, cheeks dewy from having been “vaporized”, and the bracing feel of wet skin in icy conditions hits me.  That’s the image that was playing in my brain during this mornings shave.  I breathed deeply and finished my second pass with a great big ol grin.
