A plain soap. The most exotic ingredient is glycerin. Easy to lather, generates a light voluminous pearly-white Santa-like coating to the face. The major drawback for me is that it tends to dry out faster than I'm able to complete my one-pass shaving routine. Post shave is poor.

Despite the above, I love this soap. What keeps me getting back to it from time to time is the scent. It instantly sends me back 30+ years to a communist-style barbershop in Bucharest at the ground floor of a grey 10 storey apartment building. It brings to the surface vivid bits of distant memories from the abbys of my own self. No other soap does that for me. It almost makes me feel uneasy, I'm drawn to it somehow and can't help staring at it sometimes and inhaling the scent deeply.

The production process is also nice, with quite a bit of manual work. Also reminds me of how life used to be in the communist era.

Saint James of London : Bergamot & Sandalwood

Had this jar for 5+years..... second usage per scent [meh]. Performance for a cream quite amazing. Easy to lather, slick, and nice post - and has stayed soft per the ample glass jar [reminiscent of MdC glass].

Yes, DanLaw, I can see what you’re hinting at now. A fixation can be a dangerous thing, as my fat fishy book shows so well. I’ll imbibe that lesson gladly. But like the peg-legged captain, I’m finding it hard to peel myself away from my Leviathan. With each shave I learn a little more about the lather and its ways, and the subtleties of the scent slowly reveal themselves. I mix it up now in a bowl with a liberal tablespoon of water all at the start. There’s no need for a slow drip, drip, drip from the tap. This soap can go from smear to humble crest in a minute or two without any thought of breaking.

It's been a while since I've contemplated what my favorite scents are, but this could possibly be Numero Uno.
