Barrister’s Reserve Spice t. (Barrister & Mann) Old Spice (-ish)
Shave 1 ・ 100% left

I’ve been playing these Barrister’s Reserve pucks all wrong. In the past I’ve given them 150 swirls until my brush was bursting with soap. The lathers came out nice (but not amazing). What was most impressive was the amount of lather I washed down the drain. I generally had enough for about fifteen passes. Nevertheless, no complaints. I was a happy camper.

Today, though, I stopped by Will’s web site to check out the latest offerings. As I was browsing through the Barrister’s Reserve section I bumped into these Directions for Use: ‘Wet your shaving brush well, then swirl it around the jar for about 25 swirls or until a rich, creamy lather is formed. Continue building the lather by adding water (lots of it)’. Twenty-five swirls? Who does he think he is, Martin de Candre? I thought this was a misprint, or a gross miscalculation (off by about a hundred). But I tried it anyway. I can always go back for more soap, I told myself. So, twenty-five swirls and then straight to my face. At first it was downright pasty, much more so than when I loaded heavy. But after about ten minutes of hydrating the lather – unsparingly, and with a wee bit of malice – I got a great, heavy, dense, slick, gorgeous heap of creamy white yogurt. I wanted to pour honey on it, it looked so good. Shaved good too. Even my wimpy Merkur 42 loaded with a not-so-sharp Big Ben blade left my hide feeling polished. Wish I had read the directions earlier. Wish Will had printed them right on the label.
