Killing a hard soap puck is difficult. Killing one when you have a hundred other choices is exponentially difficult. I find myself binning more soaps than I finish either because they go “off” (rare) or they just don’t interest me like they used to. Binning is too harsh a word. More often they are relegated to shower duty and with a 27 acre body, a soap doesn’t stand a chance. Or they are gifted to someone else that does find them interesting. DR Harris however will not be chucked or showered. I like them too much as evidenced by my back up pile. This Marlborough is translucent it’s so thin but with that said I bet there are still 8 to 10 shaves in the wafer sized puck.

There’s nothing earth shattering about Spitfire’s performance. Now five years old, it really can’t compare to the superfatted delicacies put out by current soap cookers. But it still lays down a layer of protection that keeps the blade at bay, and it holds its shape for the entire shave. In fact, it reminds me a lot of Barrister & Mann’s early soaps. In spite of these virtues, I may have retired Spitfire some time ago if it weren’t for its fragrance – leather work gloves smeared with oil and tree sap. Smells like you’ve spent the morning with the chainsaw. And it sort of reminds me of Fahrenheit (Dior) but with an unexpected off note of ammonia replacing the nutmeg.
