Wholly Kaw King of Oud

The puck of Harris Marlborough is getting smaller but boy howdy the thing shrinks slowly.  I’ve been working on it for a couple of years now I suppose.  The scent is still just as lively as the day I cracked it open.  So very nice.  A dry cedar and if you like cedar this is a good one.  This soap offers me everything I like about wet shaving.  Great, slick gobs of lather in a classic package.  To say I’m a DR Harris fan is an understatement.

Grooming Department Le Vetiver

This is a vetiver that Lip would not like. It is very tame. Not rooty, wet or dirt like. This one is very clean, grassy, and I dare say ' fruity.' So well blended I had difficulty picking out individual scent notes. This will be a summer vetiver in my rotation.

A spectrum of raw/brute vetiver, from strength to pale for you root lovers follows : Salters cream, Mike's, MdC Vetyver, Sir Henry's, Mystic Water, Caties, Saponificio Varesino Desert Vetiver, and lastly Grooming Department LeVetiver.

Tabacco Verde v. (Tcheon Fung Sing) tobacco flower

Three months ago this tub of Tabacco Verde arrived in the mail a shriveled up scrap of what it once was. In fact, it weighed less than a quarter of what the package stated. My vendor must have let it sit on his shelf for years. The label called it a cream, but it was more like a bin of dust. What to do? It seemed clear that all that had been lost was the water. So I put the soap on the scale and dumped in some water until it weighed the 150 grams that were advertised. And then I let it sit, and sit, and sit. Finally today when I popped off the lid, I found a smooth, fragrant lotionlike soap that was a pleasure to load and made a stupendous lather. I have to admit I’m really looking forward to tucking into this revived Tabacco Verde again soon. (But I’ll probably choose my vendors more carefully in the future.)

Declaration Groomings After the Rain claims to smell like a forest after a rainstorm.  It smells great but unfortunately it does not smell like my forest post wetting.  Scent notes are wet pine, cedar, muted lavender and white pepper.  I get the pepper and lavender and strangely a mint scent that is not stated to be in the mix.  It is a lovely scent, just not what I was expecting.  Great performance though.(Sure was hoping for the “wet pine” though).

I seem to get mostly anise/fennel out of this one...
and I agree with you, it's not really as advertised but still really like it. Calming and very enjoyable.

I lathered up with Desert Vetiver SV again today to give it another shot. I think I’m around 8-10 shaves in. A couple comments were mentioned on the scent of this a couple pages back. Bouki mentions guava soap poured on sage brush and I appreciate his thoughts. When I read other people’s comments and take them in to see if I can experience the different facets of a scent. Sometimes another description helps expose those other sides you may not pick up on when you use it the first couple times. I still find it very hard to identify so I hope ExtraProtein enjoys it if he ends up getting it.

The in-shave protection is nice, slick and good residual as well as a great aftershave. My skin feels really nice so as always I appreciate the skin conditioning from each release. My shave went really comfortable so it is still just a lack of excitement on the scent. The desert as a place was mentioned earlier and I don’t really equate my trips to the “desert” with some of the scent notes in this soap. My nose is getting a lot of floral on it but it is still muddy. Nero made a neat post on Tabac last week which I liked. I would say I could happily go with Tabac and enjoy that scent more than this right now. I would prefer B&M Roam over most scents. That seemed to be a bit more controversial for many years but for me, that scent offers a nice smoke note that does remind me of the “desert” or a campfire so to speak.

TommyCarioca had listed quite a few of the heavy hitters in the vetiver category and I would say a couple like Mike’s Vetiver, Cyril R Salters Vetiver, and I’ll add one to his list if he doesn’t mind, Jabonman Tierra Humeda. Those are definitely bold and smelly scents, not in a bad way, but offer that heavy earth and can be strong. I do enjoy vetiver but those examples of shave soaps I don’t like to use. It’s a bit heavy on my nose but those that can rock that scent, I applaud you. I go for a fougere to get a bit of a “heavier” or greener scent choice.

I think I will take a break from mucking up the soap choice thread. I appreciate everyone letting me spam some of my fragrance thoughts this last week. Enjoy your shaves everyone, cheers
