Folgefonn v. (Fitjar Islands) mint wood
In 2015 Fitjar Islands hired the design group ANTI to rebrand its image. The results have been stunning: Fitjar Islands now offers its soaps in rosewood bowls, wrapped in gyotaku paper, and housed in beautifully printed boxes. (Yeah, I had to look up gyotaku: "a traditional form of Japanese fish printing in which an actual fish is placed on a surface and then painted on one side with sumi ink. Next the artist places a piece of paper over the ink-covered fish and rubs the material until the image of the fish is transferred to it.”) Overkill? Slightly. But Fitjar Islands remains a cottage/niche/artisan shop; an artisan shop, though, whose products have a professional appearance that rivals the very best. This new look has led to new customers as hotels are now stocking Fitjar Islands' cosmetics in their rooms. By drawing on the skills of a professional design house, Fitjar Islands has vastly improved its image and expanded its clientele, a step that so many other soap cookers could benefit from.
