Sebum Gold for my 60th Birthday shave and I wonder if I'm worth it. I am not a dermatologist but I am covered in an epidermis so perhaps I have sufficient experience to lend an opinion? My son brought it by for me to take for a test spin. The packaging is impressive to say the least. ¼” thick glass jar with printed wooden labels? The post shave serum has a shaker top and stopper sealed in wax. Seems a bit overkill for a puck of soap but hey, what do I know? I popped the cork out and was met with a scent so familiar to me but I could not put a name to it. This scent is “Spa Day” and very pleasantly Woody and herbaceous with a floral note in there with it. I chose the latest brush the kid built for me and loaded up to face lather. Lather is super low structure in my Idaho water and reminiscent of Murphy and McNeil. As I lathered it struck me the similar scent is Barrister and Manns Rhapsody except Rhapsody is sweeter and doesn't have the herby nature of Sebum Gold. Lather builds slowly but is very shiny and slick. Shaved well. Smelled great. Post was a little tight but a dash of Post Serum sure cleaned that up. But $200 for the soap and the serum? Not sure I'm pretty enough for that. Their website really spoke about skin care and I am sure, just like every other endeavor, a world of info is available that has escaped my attention. But I get along with cheap raw Shea butter just as well I think. I respect what they do but I'm not their target market. It was fun though.
