Fougère v. (Martin de Candre) vrai fougère

The Martin de Candre brand was started by Dominique and Rosine Dauge in the 1970s. They learned soap making from André Chapui. Their daughter, Hélène Strodijk, now runs the family business. I'm sure they're all wonderful people, but none is named Candre. So let me ask, who is this Martin de Candre fellow, whose mustachioed portrait graces the lid of each pot?

Crabtree & Evelyn Lavender shaving cream (vintage).  This made wonderful lather, but I'm not quite as fond of its scent as I am of the C&E Sweet Almond Oil scent.

Such an awesome scent and an under appreciated soap.
