Pappy would strop an old black straight, wet his face, work up a lather with an old boar brush from the puck in an old white mug. 2 passes and a wipe down from a white towel on his shoulder, and then a splash of old spice before church [Presbyterian] we are of Scottish decent - of course last name Scott. Pappy was a train mechanic - shoveled coal and worked on the engines as the trains passed through western KY and southern Indiana. Before that he worked in the coal mines of Eastern KY. He died when I was in college - grandma passed and he couldn't eat...brokenhearted. He was always whittling and sharpening something. Fresh wood shavings and old spice was his sillage. He hand carved toys for me when i a was small boy. He only had an 8th grade education, but raised 4 musicians. All four kids played instruments professionally [piano, trumpet]. Big regret for me was I didn't grab the razor, strop, or that old bowl. But I remember him every time I shave with the spice. [Image: 5685a2c112fc3747499087b45646d958.jpg]

For a guy who “slowed down” I sure have a lot of new soaps to try yet.  The Movember box is keeping me busy!  Today I finally got to Wholly Kaw Spice Vitae and quite frankly at first sniff I was underwhelmed.  Best descriptor I can come up with is medical office cacophony.  It immediately gave off a vibe of antiseptic cleansers and a trip to the doc.  Yuck! But there was a spicy vibe going on too and I resolved one day I would get to the tub rather than moving it along.  Well today was the day and I was pleasantly surprised.  The soap itself performed flawlessly as expected but the scent was the surprise.  Upon lathering I picked up a coffee-forward note and boy do I like the smell of coffee although I do not drink it.  If for no other reason than that, this soap found a home.  There are other reasons though.  I don't/can't pick out all the notes stated by the maker but I do get pepper, benzoin, and vanilla.  Yep, she opens up pretty well on lathering.  Post shave I gave the puck a sniff and it was back to the old Dr.s office smell.  Odd.  Lovely. A keeper.[Image: bsA7vTn.jpg]

A nice citrus forward scent, with good protection, and a multi dimensional dry down of citrus, musk and powder. Reminiscent of Razorock XXX, but a better mix IMO. [Image: be0814c458aebf5d9075632d32801821.jpg]

Truefitt and Hill 1805. It’s currently the only cream I have. I use soaps 98% of the time. Keep trying to like cream tho.

Dark Limes v. (Meißner Tremonia) lime leaf, peel, litsea cubeba

Dark Limes is scented with lime juice and the oils extracted from lime leaves, lime peels, and the dried fruit of the may chang tree, known as litsea cubeba (pictured below). The fruits look like little black pepper corns, but they smell nothing like that. Instead, litsea cubeba gives off a sweet lemony scent that many perfumers prefer to actual lemon oil. It has the added advantage of being very stable. Unlike lemon oil, litsea cubeba oil doesn’t go rancid, so it finds a happy spot in cosmetics. It’s good it lasts so long, because this soap is as dense as a brick and will probably last for years if not decades.
