Bay Rum t. (Barrister & Mann) orange, cinnamon, West Indies bay, benzoin
This is my third tub of BM Bay Rum. The other two were given away before even a handful of shaves. Both times it was late autumn, and the combination of orange and cinnamon was cloying. It smelled too much like spiced wassail at Christmas. To bring out the best in bay rum, you need the warmth and bright sunlight of late spring and summer. This is a soap for the beach house.
I've no idea what base this is. Excelsior? Glissant? White label? Revived white label? There are so many horses on the track now it's hard to even see who's running. All that's certain is that it makes a pot of suds that are extremely wet, heavy, and slick. And it's rich with tallow, so it's perfect for the heart of the summer when all-vegetable soaps often prove no match for prickly heat.
Today I also tried a small sample of Edwin Jagger's pre-shave lotion. The label didn't mention the menthol. It's surprising chill didn't pair well with warm bay rum. Shaving with both products at once was sort of like trying to chew gum while eating spaghetti.
