Italian Barbershop v. (Le Père Lucien)
not quite bay rum
A few soaps border on bay rum, but for the lack of either bay or rum, they don't quite fit in the category. I'm thinking of Tallow+Steel's West Indies, Fitjar Island's Slåtterøy, classic Old Spice, and today's soap, Italian Barbershop. Don't care for clove? You won't find a heap of it here. Each of these soaps is a blend of citrusy and spicy notes with a dash of herb thrown in to create a gentle tropical vibe. They're warm, a little exotic, and very well mannered, much better suited to a cool pool side retreat than a bristling quarterdeck. Instead of seeking to recreate a brash piratical past, these gentle cousins of bay rum turn to the kitchen for inspiration. Think of fresh orange slices lightly dusted with coriander, allspice, or cinnamon and garnished with a tropical flower.
If this culinary approach sounds too tame, you can always finish your shave with a few brisk spritzes from a flask of St John's Bay Rum.
