Vétyver v. (Martin de Candre) citrus vetiver

This smells like a pale version of Tom Ford's Grey Vetiver. I get top notes of neroli and bergamot overlaying a thin layer of clean green vetiver, all couched in MdC's inescapable – but not always annoying – rubbery base. All in all, the fragrance is light, inoffensive, and alas, a little bit boring. I was hoping for a scent as whoppingly complex and addictive as MdC Fougère. Instead, I got another 'serene' soap. Maybe as I mine my way down into the heart of the jar I'll hit some fresher, bolder notes.

The shave, too, fell slightly short of expectations. Though I loaded my brush for a full minute, the lather came out thin. What's even more atypical of shave with an MdC soap, my razor didn't get all that close. Makes you wonder. The soap in this jar was laid down a couple years ago and it hasn't been touched much since. Both the scent and the shave seem to have slightly suffered from lack of love. Let's see if a stiffer brush and a few vigorous shaves don't bring it back into mid-season form.

My oh my! Now your speaking my language. My fondest hope is that Salters will make THIS SCENT in a puck. I love vetiver and this one is the top of the heap! If clean vetiver is the Girl-next-door, French Vetiver is a cocktail waitress in a Dolly Parton wig to steal a phrase from Confederate Railroad.

A long load with a boar brush still led to a surprisingly small amount of lather. With MdC a little is reputed to go a long, long way, but I was seeing the opposite. Tempted to reload for the third pass, I decided to first rinse the brush. As I ran it under the tap I noticed the remaining wisps of lather suddenly become very, very slick. So, I hyper hydrated what was left in the lather bowl until it took on a light slimy texture, and painted a thin coat on my face. When I made the third pass, I could have sworn the blade had fallen into the sink. There was no sensation of tugging or cutting. It felt like I was rubbing my skin with a bit of polished marble.

I've clearly got a lot to learn about this soap. Though I've used MdC for years, I've always worked from samples. I found it to be an interesting though not particularly jaw-dropping soap. I see now that loading from a full jar calls for more patience and lots more water, but the results can be astonishing.
