Le Petit Chypre t. (Barrister & Mann Latha) ★★★★☆ petitgrain, labdanum, oakmoss
Chypres almost always feature labdanum and oakmoss. Together they create a rugged, resinous base that in drydown gives this fragrance family its distinctive bitter flavor. The opening note is generally a citrus: for this soap B&M have chosen petitgrain, the oil extracted from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree. These three pungent notes give Le Petit Chypre a strong, acrid umph that's about half way between incense and blue cheese. I really like the scent, and I'm kicking myself now I didn't buy a dozen tubs before it and the rest of the Latha line was discontinued.
