Royal Fougère (Asylum Shave Works) ★★★★☆ garden fern
Fresh mint ringed with a garland of lavender, rosemary, and basil - the smell of an herb garden in high summer – that's what this soap reminds me of. The lather brings out the earthy, mossy notes of musk, amber, and patchouli that give the aroma balance. It's all instantly attractive, especially if you like traditional fougère's such as Penhaligon's English Fern or Trumper's Wild Fern.
The soap itself may take a little tinkering in order to appreciate its potential. It really is a great soap, but it took some doing to make a great lather. It came in a three-inch tin that was awkwardly small and also prone to corrosion. So, I scooped the tightly packed soap into a four-inch plastic tub where I had enough room to load a brush. After that adjustment, it made a thick, protective lather. But even though the lather was thick, it was not always slick. I'll have to keep fiddling with the ratio of soap to water to try to improve the glide. It can also leave you feeling dry and tight for a few hours until the Shea butter kicks in. After that, it's plump.
The label says Asylum Shave Works, but the soap is almost certainly made by Wet Shaving Products as both the ingredients and the packaging seem identical to WSP's Formula T tallow soap.
