French Vetiver (Cyril R. Salter) coffee vetiver
Though French Vetiver's cushion may be light as a cloud, its scent hits you like a cubic yard of wet compost. I love vetiver, from Mike's nutty seagrassy scent, to Marshland's spicy sedgelike aroma, to Vetivertal's leather-n-dust accord, it's all good and agreeable. But for sheer olfactory volume, none of these heavy hitters can swing a stick at Salter's French Vetiver. Its dense, smoky smell of burnt coffee grounds, rust, and boiled spinach is utterly incomparable and inexplicably attractive. Ten hours after my last rinse, my wife sidled up to me, took a sniff, and said, 'Mmmmm. This one's the best."

I do not care for celery as a food, yet I find this shaving cream oddly attractive, and a joy to use…

Latha: Le Petit Chypre (Barrister & Mann) petitgrain, oakmoss, labdanum
Labdanum, a gamey resin brushed from sheep's wool, has become the signature scent of most chypres, the family of fragrances that take their name from the island of Cyprus. The resin is produced by a plant called cistus, also known as rockrose, which grows abundantly on Cyprus and is a favorite food of the sheep and goats that browse its rocky hills. I really like the smell of labdanum. It's both wild and refined. Le Petit Chypre puts labdanum front and center, and I'm nursing this small tub carefully since the soap is no longer made.
