Oxford & Cambridge (Czech & Speake) lavender & oakmoss
If you could make your own perfume, what would it smell like? I ask my friends this question from time to time, and their answers are usually quite descriptive: ‘the desert just before it rains,’ ‘a crate of fresh oranges,’ ’a new home,’ ‘bread warm from the oven,’ and invariably ‘fresh linen.’ I’m not really sure what they mean by this last reply, but I suspect they have been attracted to one of two scents, either musk or lavender. While many present day laundry detergents are scented with artificial musks, traditionally sheets and towels and linens were laundered in lavender scented water. Many hand soaps still make this their principal note. In fact, the word lavender comes from the Latin verb lavare ‘to wash.’ Think of lavatory. It’s also one of very few floral scents that most men feel comfortable wearing. There’s a flower there, to be sure, but it’s grounded in dark herbal and balsamic notes that balance the floral frills. Oxford & Cambridge support this foundation with a nice drop of oakmoss.
