Tundra Artica (Saponificio Varesino) oud, cedar, sandalwood, rose
Cedar and sandalwood are softly bolstered on tangerine, cashmeran, and leather, giving this soap a warm elegant setting. But the story is mostly about oud. It’s a haunting scent, not well known to western perfumery until 2002, when Tom Ford introduced it (or a synthetic interpretation of it) in the YSL fragrance M7. That perfume flopped, but interest in oud blossomed and has finally found its way into the olfactory backwater of men’s shaving soaps. Within the last year and a half many widely known artisans – Saponificio Varesino, Le Père Lucien, L&L Grooming, JabonMan, PAA, Van Yulay, RazoRock – have each come out with a soap that puts oud front and center. Since the synthetic version of oud can be dry, wispy, and a little bitter, perfumers pair it with rose, tobacco, or sandalwood to give it body and sweetness.

To ensure as rich and stable a lather as possible, I started with a damp but not wet brush, and loaded as much soap paste as I could before introducing more water. The result was a very pleasant shave, and I thoroughly enjoy Michelle’s scent creations. I was very surprised when I weighed the soap after it had dried, and discovered that the 30 mm knot had only devoured 1.5 grams of soap.
