Felce Aromatica (Saponificio Varesino) citrus floral

I spent the day in the nurseries sniffing ferns, hoping to pick out the most aromatic for the garden. Apart from a little hay fever, all I brought home was the realization that none of them, of course, smells like the scent we call fougère or felce, that heady mix of lavender, coumarin, and oak moss. In fact, most ferns smell like nothing more than chlorophyl and dirt. I was told that they reproduce through scattering their spores on the wind. Since they don’t have to lure bugs, or beasts, or birds to carry their seed, they’ve never developed an attractive scent.
