Stella Alpina (Saponificio Varesino) ★★★★ citrus, herbs, eucalyptus
The surest way for me to predict an excellent shave is to measure the time since I shaved last. If I go at least 29 hours since my last shearing, my next shave is pretty certain to be remarkably close and comfortable.
Today the stars fell in line and I hit the magic number, 29 hours. Under these conditions, my skin has healed from its last scraping, and just about any soap or cream yields delightful results. I desperately wanted Stella Alpina to shine. I paid a lot of money for it, but my shaves, up to this point, have left my skin tight and tender. Today was make or break for this soap. I’m happy to write that it made it: thick, meltingly smooth lather gave me ample protection for three painless passes. A small dab of balm took care of the tightness. And, of course, the scent attracted my wife from the far corner of the house, like a honey bee to clover.
