Bois Floraux (Cold River Soap Works) wood & violets
When I first opened this tin of Bois Floraux in April 2016, I got a big whiff of sweet caramel, rose, woods, and flowers. I liked it so much I kept it by the bed and took a sniff every now and then. It was complex and pleasing. Unfortunately, the sweet smells disappeared several months ago, their place taken by a bitter caustic scent that burns the back of the throat. Some violet remains, but it’s best described as medicinal. My wife describes the smell as both alluring and repulsive. To me it smells like withered funeral flowers. I’ve never had a soap’s smell change so much for the worse.
What hasn’t changed at all is the soap’s performance. Three painless passes today thanks to the rich slick lather the Select V2 makes. The finish is just a little tacky.

Whenever I go to shave, I assume there’s someone else on the planet shaving, so I say “I’m gonna go shave, too.”
