Cade Shaving Soap (L’Occitane) ★★★★ bergamot, pepper, cedar
Cade was no match for the heat and humidity of August. Only the thickest, slickest lathers got me through those dog days. But temperatures have dropped now, the dew point is finally below 70°F, and today Cade treated my face to a superb shave. At $12 per puck, you can afford to be bold when you load your brush with this soap. If you use a scuttle, consider pillaging the kitchen for a melon baller and then dig deep. Add your water slowly and don’t spare your wrist. Creamy, fragrant lather will very likely be the result.
Cade is one of my older soaps. Some of its notes have been muted by long neglect. When I cracked the can open today, I barely smelled cedar, and that was all. But a few drops of water brought the scent to life. It was like opening a crate of lemons, tart, a little spicy, with a touch of pine. The pepper came in a minute later, giving it some smoothness. It all washed away clean, leaving behind just a trace of cade oil that smells faintly of juniper and leaves the skin soft and clear.
