Clay Face
Honolulu, Hawaii
Bay Rum (Barrister & Mann) orangey bay rum
Shave 20 ・ 142 g left

I had three partially used tubs of Barrister & Mann’s Bay Rum lying around the shack. They represented three different bases: a skiff of White Label, a dab of Excelsior, and a nearly full jar of Omnibus. So I scooped them altogether into one tub and called it good. They’re arranged in layers, and as I work my way through the strata I get a slightly different lather each shave. Good fun.

What about yesterday’s Martin de Candre Original, the one that seemed to give me a perfect shave? It didn’t. About ten hours after my last pass, my sensitive old skin started to hurt. Dragonsbeard, I don’t think this has anything to do with the essential oils in Original. The delayed pain happens with each fragrance. And besides, oils would have brought on the sensitivity much sooner. And I normally show some discoloration when I react to a fragrance. Yesterday, there was no blushing or itching. Instead, my face just hurt. So what’s up? I think it’s a matter of cushion, or rather lack thereof. Martin de Candre gives me a very close shave, but at the price of some discomfort. True, it’s slick, but it doesn’t have that oily subtexture that for me is the hallmark of a truly protective lather. So I think just I'm cutting it too close.

But why the delay in feeling the soreness? Well, sometimes when I slice myself with a kitchen knife the pain doesn’t start until the next day. It takes a while for the damaged nerves to reform and start telling my brain that some harm has been done. I suspect the same thing happens with shaving. Right after a close shave with a light lather, I don’t notice anything. In fact, my skin feels great. That’s because it’s partially numb from the razor having disrupted so many tiny nerve endings. Over the course of several hours the sensory nerves heal and start working again. That’s when the irritation becomes more noticeable. Just my weird theory.
