Well I sure enough do like boar bristles! I also like vintage shapes and colors! So Neal Breed and his stinking Heritage Collection nabbed me for sure with this Merit redo. I asked him to add a heritage gel boar knot too just for giggles. Been wanting to see if a gel boar is all that! The brush handle is immaculate and infinitely better built than were the originals. Plenty of heft and it feels like a Merit brush in my hand. The knot. Whelp the darn thing is huge. I measured 27 mm and loft of 48 inches. Ok, I jest, but this knot is tall. I like a boar to splay a bit so I started fiddling with the knot socket. First I drilled it out another 5mm and opened it up to 29mm and started playing with the loft. Turns out I put 5mm of epoxy back in (the amount I drilled out) and ended seating the loft at 65mm which for this stuffed boar hit just right for splay. Perhaps it’s still a bit tight but I expect over time it’ll limber up and hit the sweet spot for me. The gel treatment seems to be spot on. A boar, broken in, is a softness comparable with quality badger. This one has the feel of a broken-in boar and it’s only been lathered 5 times. The last one was this mornings face lather. She feels great. I see a few split hairs but not likely from my efforts thus far. The pig likely wasn’t lather-rinse-repeating correctly. Boar smell? Zero. In fact the knot had less odor than synthetics I get. How well will this knot perform? Don’t know yet. Boars for me only hit their stride after dozens of latherings thus I expect this one to improve over time from a very respectable first outing. I will share that it seems to want a long soak and a longer loading to build good lather. Very pleased thus far and I sure think the brush is attractive.

And good on you for setting the knot as you see fit. I have one that is way too floppy. Couldn't agitate a cup of milk.
