any opinion about the horsehide vs the slightly cheaper leathers?

I ended up getting a Tony Miller Strop in bridle leather and it is roughly the same price as the Razor Emporium strop (which is a great strop).

The ones listed on his site are the ones available for immediate shipping. However I wanted a 3" strop a while back, emailed him on a Wednesday and he made it for me and I had it on Monday.

I chose horsehide because I have a cow hide paddle strop that has a lot more draw to it. I like that for the end of a honing session. The horsehide is smoother for my pre-shave stropping, which I prefer. I honestly don't have enough experience to recognize a difference other than the feeling of the draw during stropping.

I passed on the Latigo as I heard rumors that the draw is very strong and I didn't want something that felt sticky or more grabby than even the cowhide is. Yea I made my choice for the more expensive leather based on a rumor I never investigated further. It's only a $10 difference so I took a chance...

From what I've read, any relatively smooth leather will work, even an old belt (which I have used a few times with no issues). My understanding is that it comes down to preference, usually draw resistance, as BadDad alludes to. My perception is that horsehide is often desired for its smooth draw.

None of this is based on my experience - just what I've read in looking at various strops over time.

So I had my first shave and came out ok.

Was a bit nerve racking try to go ATG in my neck area, but I did it without blood loss this time.... I found if it's showing resistance it's probably because I applied to much pressure.

Sorry that I'm late to the party. Did you get everything squared away?

Forgot about this post!

Yes, everything's good so far. Haven't cut myself too badly... yet.

Thanks for asking!
