Borneo 1834 (Serge Lutens) cocoa & patchouly

Don’t worry about smelling like a brownie, it’s not that kind of cocoa. Though the fragrance is sweet, it’s not a sugary sweetness. Instead, it’s like sniffing a tin of dark, brown, rich cocoa powder, but without any bitterness. Patchouly, of course, is the other principal note, and like the cocoa, it’s dark, earthy, and clinging. Soft amber notes and quite a bit of dried fruit round out the fragrance. A good Saturday scent.

Imagine you're walking through a pine forest, and you stumble upon a small church where high mass is being celebrated, while lemonade is served in the north transept. It's slightly surreal but very pleasant. If you've ever polished the pews in an old chapel, you'll instantly recognize this aroma.

Tom Ford & Black Orchid (EDP)

Bulgari Black (Bulgari) rubber, leather, florals, vanilla

The flowery bits came as a surprise. I was expecting the leather, rubber, and the vanilla, but this sweetness that lingers both charmed and put me off a little. The jasmine wells up and sort of gushes all over at unexpected moments throughout the day. The lapsang souchang tea, which could have given the florals some smoky balance, seems to have wandered off somewhere into the desert.
