I'm trying to move away from the prying eyes and services that make money off of my data. currently I'm using gmail but I'm looking at alternatives...

- protonmail is a little spendy for my blood..

- tutanota is affordable, but it only lets you send encrypted emails. if you try to send an email to someone who is not using tutanota, it requires a password to be set for the email, if memory serves me correctly. this isn't really feasible as I'd bet 99% of my contacts do not use said service..

- mailfence is also affordable and doesn't suffer from the above mentioned issues with unencrypted emails. it also integrates in with 3rd party apps to fetch your emails....if I go with this service, I'd likely connect to it using thunderbird on my desktop and fair email on my android phone.

what's everyone using?

fastmail, since '04 I think. Quite satisfied. I'm currently paying $80/2-years, though they don't mention the 2-year rate on their pricing page so maybe I'm being grandfathered?

I've never even heard of the services you mention, Andrew.  While your reasons for switching are great, I think the average person just wants something that works smoothly.  The other thing is that e-mail services such as G-mail and/or Apple's Mail just make it that much easier to have one stay tied to a particular ecosystem which gets back to your noting the monetizing of a person's information.

You have me curious now and I shall be watching this thread to see what information is out there.

Great question Andrew.
I would love to have an alternative to gmail.
I’m not smart enough to find a good one.
Looking forward to the responses.
I did find this one…

Protonmail is excellent... and its free (unless you need a bunch of cloud storage or custom features)

protonmail doesn't encrypt some stuff, like subject lines, which I find annoying. that said, they're very popular.

is the calendar included in their free tier?

I have my own domain name - northernelectric.ca - (which I pay for) and the hosting service (stormweb.ca) provides email as part of the package.
It's good to be king (of one's own email service).

I also use an address that's provided by my ISP which, again, is a paid service.

So I guess the trick is not to use a free email service.
