The DD get a great edge off shaptons too. Congrats on getting a nice shave off a hard ozuku. Some people struggle with really hard jnats. Less is more often with these guys.

Thanks!  Yes...JNS sold this Ozuku as a Level 5+.  I suspect that since I spent so much time dialing in my finishing technique on the jasper and the translucent ark that this “5+” doesn’t seem that hard to me...especially since that’s my frame of reference and this is my first useable JNAT.

At any rate, I’ll take it, and this is a keeper!

I think the people that struggle with those are folks that try to one stone hone after bevel set. From my personal experience those hard ozuku just don’t work well for this method. But if your taking it through 4 or 8k on synthetics then the world is your oyster.

I don’t know how you honed this blade. Just speaking in generalities. Congrats and man it’s so rewarding to get a nice edge off a new stone.

Yes...This particular edge was:

1k Chosera
4k Shapton Glass
8k Naniwa
Jasper Finishing side with Ozuku Tomo Nagura Slurry
Jasper finishing side under water
Escher Barbers Gem

I used it 5 or six times, and then this Ozuku Koppa arrived so I dropped the edge back to the Naniwa 8k, and then finished on the Ozuku Koppa with Ozuku Tomo slurry eventually diluted down to just water for the final 30 laps or so.  It worked out quite nicely!

Thanks again!

I’m lucky enough to live about 20 minutes from Alex at Japanstones. When I stone shop with him I bring whatever razor I’m trying to find a stone for and we go to town trying different stones. So any stone I have, with the exception of my hard ozuku, can go directly off the 1k to finish with just 20-40 laps and some slurry. Some stropping and good to go. It’s pretty amazing but not an easy task to get those kind of results. Neat to see what a natural stone can do though under ideal circumstances.

The initial shave with this razor off of the jasper was truly excellent!

However, I wanted to see how it feels off of the Ozuku Koppa.  I dropped it back down to 8k, and then finished on the Ozuku with slurry eventually diluted down to just water.  As with the Dubl Duck, the bevel near the edge looks great under the 30x loupe with no discernible scratches, and it passed the HHT with absolute ease.

I will shave test it tomorrow, and see what I see!

Well I didn’t make it to tomorrow for the shave test...the Otto was fantastic!  Doesn’t get too much better than that edge!  Of course I will continue to try to find a better edge...but WoW!

Good stuff!

This was my first time trying the mystery EBay JNAT out as a finisher. It looked like a real dog from the sellers pictures.  It was a miracle it wasn’t broken during shipping...no bubble wrap, just put in a USPS bag and shipped.

I dropped the edge back to the 8k, and then made a neon orange rust colored slurry, and gave it a shot. The bevel near the edge appears to be better than the bevel off of the jasper, and the razor more effectively passed the HHT. Note the mirror finish...the reflections are more crisp than the reflections from the jasper.

I can’t wait to shave test this edge tomorrow or Sunday...see how the weekend goes!

Yes...this unknown JNAT put a better edge on the Shavesmith FBU than the jasper...color me impressed!

This is the other razor that has given me fits when honing, so I figured that I would give it a spin on this unknown Jnat. End result was the same as what I was able to do with the Shavesmith FBU. I think I will shave test it on Monday I suspect!

I do believe this rock is the real deal, and I am looking forward to finishing easy razors like a Double Duck or a Filarmonica on it!
