What are your razors that live up to the hype and those don't?

I love watching these threads/debates as there is NEVER agreement because it is different for everyone. I already see ones I agree with that others don't and vice versa. And everyone thinks if you don't agree with them you don't know how to shave..........I'll refrain and watch from the cheap seats

If this thread was a blog post or online newspaper headline, we'd call it clickbait, hahahaha.  Then again, I too can't help myself and rubberneck whenever I come upon a car crash.

IMO the Wolfman WR1 is an overrated and overpriced razor (I've never tried the WR2).  Both the Haircut & Shave Co. P076 and the Carbon Razor Co .68 outperform it, and at a much lower price.  However if you want a shiny jewel and you've got a lot of money, then by all means buy a Wolfman; it's got the bling.  

OTOH if you want a superbly efficient CNC machined razor at a reasonable price, that looks like a tool not a jewel, then there's none better than the Yates Precision Machine 921; either M plate or H plate, as suits you.  You won't be disappointed.

Never had a chance to use WR1 but I think WR2 is one of the best razors produced today.

I like Carbon 0.68 but not so much. I dont think it is a better razor than much less expensive ones like GC 0.84, Karve or Henson. and I've never experienced H&S P076 but I think H&S N075 is a superb razor.

I've heard lots of folks say YPM razor is one of the best bargains on the market. Though I am interested, I dont think I will buy one. I am mostly a vintage only guy and I think I've purchased enough modern razors. No more modern razors except a couple of ones I am looking for Thanks for the recommendation though.

When I have a full-comfort long-lasting BBS with my cheap FrankenRazor PP1489 (or Colonial Razors The General V1 AL), I feel others as overhyped.
I've tried dozens of jewel-like razors, and I love them. But for me razors are tools.
Same result / less price = Better option.

Sorry, I'm a bit naif.

While I am new to the DE game I compare all the DEs to my high end razors like Max Sprecher, Drew Dick, Mastro Livi, Jerry Stark, Koraat, Mike Martinez,, Robert Williams, etc. I expect them to shave so I have BBS after two passes.

Still wanting a Blackland Blackbird and Above the Tie H1.

Gents,

I had transitioned to straights, but found that my chin doesn’t like them as much as I do in the colder weather with the heat turned on in my house.  So I figured that I would fool around with my DE razors, and vintage blades for the season.

In my opinion, these three razors are the REAL deal (in order of perfection):

1.  Carbon Shaving Co. All Titanium with standard web baseplate - I had never held or used a titanium razor before yesterday.  I always sort of thought them faddish and overpriced...I was wrong...whatever he charges for these...it’s worth it...the razor is a treasure, absolute perfection on my face!  It is also light as a toothpick...pretty neat!


2.  RazoRock .84 Game Changer Open Comb - WoW was I impressed...what an efficient, smooth, and attractive razor.  What you get at the set price point is pretty tough to beat...I think everyone should have one of these.  I like the .84 better than the .68.


3.  THE 1946-47 Gillette Aristocrat - I love these little Twist To Open golden razors!  They are neat, smooth, and efficient...just marvelous shavers, and handsome to boot!  It feels great in my hand, 
and has never left me with anything less than a SUPERB shave!  I have four sons, and I have acquired a New Old Stock one with the original case and blade holder for each of them.  My plan is to gift them to each son when they do something special later in life.  I have two that I use...one in gold, and one that has been re-plated  with rhodium.


I would hate to call any razors “over-hyped,” simply because everyone’s face and preferences are different, and all of the artisans work hard to provide us with their best products.

- adjustable DE razors as a category (I’ve tried lots, all Gillettes, Merkurs, Parker, etc)
- Timeless brass
