I have to put in another vote for dihydromyrcenol. That and whatever it is that's responsible for the generic cologne smell you find in a lot of deodorants these days. Thing is, the latter isn't something I dislike in and of itself, but it's just overused and has bad associations (think: someone who stinks and puts on deodorant to cover it up instead of taking a shower).

Patchouli is a necessary EO for a lot of good scents but if used heavily it does turn a lot of people off. I have a bottle of it and actually like the scent but I don't use it alone.

all I know is that on its own, it's always smelled very bad to me.

You're definitely not alone. It's such an unpopular fragrance/EO that some soap makers even mention to not avoid a soap because of it. It's often hard to discern in more complex scents but plays its part, which is the only reason i even mentioned that. Soap Commander realizes a lot of people dislike patchouli as can be seen in their scent description for Confidence below.

Confidence fragrance is a smooth, sensual and suave blend with notes of honey, musk, and a hint of patchouli. Don't let the word "patchouli" scare you off...this is one sweet and intoxicating scent!

I haven't had the chance to smell confidence yet. I have a sample of it in my drawer...it'll be up next after I finish passion - probably the best scent I've smelled thus far. simply amazing!

I have Confidence- at first I didn't care for it. Then it was Ok. Later became awesome. Passion is great but my favorite is Courage out of the "regular" flavors.

Not a fan of Bay Rum and generally do not like patchouli. I don't hate the scent of marzipan, but I could never see myself buying Cella. I like cocoa as a scent, but avoid chocolate scents (no I do not avoid chocolate).

Yeah, most of my favorite scents have Patchouli included in them, but I'm not crazy about it by itself.

Patchouli is indeed a tricky one. If it's blended right, it tends not to offend (unless you really, really can't abide it at all). But it's worth pointing out that there are different types of patchouli, different grades of the EO, and there are also molecular distillates that give it a smoother, sweeter character and take away the rough, musty edge. For an example of this, check out Chanel Coromandel, which has a smooth, sweet character but definitely has plenty of patchouli. It's many steps above an inexpensive "head shop" sort of patchouli EO.

I don't like musty, rough patchouli either, but I've come to realize that certain types of patchouli are fine for me.
