I made a homemade WH splash this time and it came out very nice.

Jamolay’s Black Pepper and Lime

Not likely coming to market, but I am happy about it.

The hardest part may have been getting the hot spice small out of the bottle! I learned a technique to do that!

It is a “casual” recipe without measurements (so anything I mention is very roughly). I also used 90% isopropyl alcohol, because I had it. In the future I would use ethyl.

Grated skin from one medium to large lime soaked 1 month in 1/3 cup alcohol.

3 tbs whole pepper then crushed coarsely soaked 1 month in 1/3 cup alcohol.

These were then combined for convenience in a jar of “lime/pepper” alcohol extract.

4 oz plain witch hazel
1/2 oz “lime/pepper” extract
1/2 oz aloe/glycerin product I had on hand (unscented and has a mix of other stuff)

That is it. Actually ratios may not be accurate. I did by scent.

Does the aloe/glycerin render it viscid (pardon my abuse of the word) ?

No. I didn’t put very much in the splash. Even alone the aloe/glycerin is a light gel and goes on smoothly.

The aloe/glycerin is a skin soother/ healing lotion I had bought for my misadventures with shaving. It has a few other things in it that I wouldn’t put in to my splash if I wasn’t being lazy and just using what is on hand.

I used the splash this morning and it was nice. I think the aloe and glycerin help moisturize a titch.

I also did an electric shaver shave yesterday (sorry no photo's). I had a light beard, and had done a double pass SE shave late Friday night before going out. The weather has been very cold (for this area) for about three weeks now, so for the first time in a long, long time, my face felt dry and a little raw from the SE safety razor shave. So, I went electric. Used a Braun single foil shaver, with Williams "Lectric shave and a shower as the pre-shave.

So with that introduction, here are the observations: even though my beard was very light it took about five minutes with the electric to get something like a close shave. I was very careful to not use excessive pressure to force the skin trough the foil guard, but it did take going over the same areas repeatedly in different directions. My face felt raw, bordering on razor burn, so I rinsed with warm water, dried my face and followed up with a glycerine based aftershave that I really do not care for.

Next day report is no permanent damage done.

Conclusion: doing this every day (and that is what would be required with an electric) would eventually tear up my face., and there is nothing as gentle for my skin as a straight razor shave with a good tallow based soap.

Interesting. I use a SkullShaver Pitbull
With 4 rotary heads for my scalp as a non-irritating option when I have had enough exfoliation or damage from various misadventures in scalping, I mean, head shaving.

I find it much, much less irritating. I have never tried a foils shaver, though. On my neck and cheeks, below and above the beard, I will use a DE or my Proof Whisky razor even when using the electric for the major scalp. I have tried the Pitbull in these areas, but it doesn’t work. Irritates and can’t get the beard lines right.

I have used a variety of Norelco rotary shavers over the years. Some with the so called "Lift-n-Cut" system, some without. My experience with those is that they do give a closer shave than the foil type electrics, but they cause in-grown hairs on my neck (especially the ones with the Lift-n-Cut system), and razor burn. I can not imagine doing a head shave with a SR. I will not even shave the back of my neck with a SR. I will not use an SR where I can not see.

Call me timid.

One thought about the electric and why it might work well on your head. I note that my electrics have done very well where the hair is very short, very stiff and straight, e.g. my chin. Not so good on curly hairs or soft hairs like my neck. Maybe the hair on your head is like the hair on my chin?

I can’t imagine a “lift and cut” razor being a good idea. Same with the “lift and cut” cartridge razors.

I agree that the electric is not so good on softer hair. It grabs and pulls on my neck. It also does not do as good a job on the very top of my head where the hair is super fine and almost gone. Best is where the hair is thickest with a pronounced grain direction (or three, like my hair). There, it does better than any razor I have tried wtg and I need a full ATG pass to surpass the electric.

I have been using a Kamisori shavette on the back of my head and I don’t use mirrors for that. It seems fine. Not different than a DE back there. I have also shaved with a DE in the shower and no mirror. I don’t think seeing has much value, except with the shavette around the ears.
