Went to the Dr today and learned something (nose congestion relief)

Long story made very short...

Instant relief for nose congestion the natural way. Eucalyptus oil. I bought the NOW brand 100% pure Eucalyptus oil. Wet a fingertip and put it on the end of the nostril and slightly inside. Just breathe. Instant relief for congestion. It's short lived, but it works. Repeat as often as required. It smells good and the eucalyptus oil isn't at all messy.

Jeff, for reasons I won't go into (only because it's a long story) my Dr wanted me to back off on the generic Afrin and Zyrtec I'd been taking. Instead to trust the Flonase. Today was the first day of that new regimen along with the Euc' oil. I was skeptical but I'm doing fine and I woke up with my left nostril, the problem one, almost totally blocked. It took a few applications over time, but it's open and free as I write this 2 hours later. Now it'll just take one application periodically throughout the day to keep it open. Unlike with Afrin or any of the other nasal sprays there is no rebound effect when discontinuing its use. Rebound effect is where the problems come back worse than they were before having taken the spray.

I use the eucalyptus oil with a diffuser in bedroom during the night whenever I have congestion. Helps me sleep easily, also works for my 5 yr old

Thanks for the advice Brian. I never really got into the nasal sprays for the reason you mentioned. After a while, it seemed to make the problem worse. I'm always down to try a natural remedy whenever possible.

I like saline spray.

Sometimes a neti pot. It's not convenient. Because I boil the water first and have to wait for it to cool down enough to use. I read horror stories about getting infected by not using sterile water in a neti pot.

The aerosol saline spray is surprisingly effective for me.

Just an aside... when I got home yesterday after buying it, the second after I cracked the seal on the bottle the wife mentioned how good and pleasant it smelled. Basically, it's camphor. It's not at all an unpleasant scent to have in ones sniffer. I intend to keep a bottle in the medicine cabinet from now on.

The dogs don't like it very much though. The male just had to crowd dad to share in what I had. He took a good smell and started sneezing. Then wouldn't come very close to the finger with the residue.

Todd, I've been using a room type humidifier and hanging my head over the discharge. I'm using boiled distilled water in it for that very reason. I don't need to add to my nose issues by adding an infection. When I was a child mom would bring in a moisturizer with something smelling much like the eucalyptus oil/camphor into my room. I don't remember much else from that, whether it worked or not. But it smelled nice.

Well, it's one of the options.

The wife loves the stuff. Now that I think of it, it does smell decent in a an odd way.

I would imagine that the same precautions would pertain to using eucalyptus oil on open skin since it's high in camphor. I know it soaks into unbroken skin fairly rapidly.

Brian, what a great idea. I love the smell of eucalyptus. I'm a big fan of Vicks Vap-o-rub. Smells great. I understand that first responders and other service types that have to attend scenes where there are strong unpleasant odours often use vicks. A dab under the nose keeps away the smell of decay.
