Washers

First time I saw washers under the baseplate was in a SOTD photo. I thought ... WOW ! ... that's so 'anal' !

Then a friend loaned me a Ti WR2 for a whole week and stipulated that I always use a washer. 

So I've been using one on any razor that it fits ever since.

I went to Ace Hdwr and bought a gang of them.

The two razors that don't fit off the top of my head are Charcoal Goods SS, and Blackbird. 

The end of the handle fits into a recess in the baseplate precluding the use of a washer. 

They are not 'necessary', but I like protecting that bit of finish. YMMV.

I too am a recent convert to using the nylon washers. I've got them on every razor that they will fit on. My routine is to break my razors down for cleaning after each shave. I couldn't tell you how many nylon washers I sent down the drain at first forgetting that they were there. They tend to stick to the baseplate and if not paying attention they'll disappear down the drain.

I take great care of my razors, but I always felt that using washers was a step too far. I was never bothered by a tiny bit of scuffing where the handle meets the razor. The only time I'll use a washer is when I'm using a borrowed razor or if I purchase a new or expensive razor catch-and-release style.

I've started using washers when I purchase a new razor. But I mainly do it for resale purposes. Many prefer to use them and if I decide I don't like the razor, I think others will/may appreciate that I had used one prior to selling. No harm/No foul to me

After I lost one of these during a razor pass-around, I decided I needed them. Once I got them, I put one on each 3 piece razor I own. I still lose them down the drain occasionally. None of the big box hardware stores or local ones in my area have these in stock. I ordered them from Amazon and got 400 of them for $9.74! This quantity is plenty to share with your local shave club members or to give away during a pass around. I am now glad I have them in my shave gear. Hopefully, no one in this forum has 400 3 piece razors to use all of them!

I've used, when the topic came over a decade ago.
Never found a real benefit.
Just understand that safety razors are not hammers.
They're precision tools, do not need strenght.
Most delicate are my favs, the coloured alum ones.
These too do not have problems, if user treats them right.
Mines are perfect after years.

I emailed James at Wolfman when I received my razor last year and asked him about the use of washers, he said to protect the threads, it's best to use all of them, and if a washer should be used, it would have to be a thickness of 1mm in order not to affect the threads.

I have the same concern about the use of washers.

Do you use a washer in transit to protect the razor from damage?Or do you always use the washer to protect the mirror finish of the razor tip?

So long as you don't over tighten, I think it is fine. I have seen someone over-tighten with the nylon washer and it made me cringe.
