Screencaps from Franco Zefirelli's 1968 movie Romeo and Juliet. When this first came out, I had read Shakespeare's plays but had never seen a production of one, and the movie really brought this time period and story alive for me.

churchilllafemme, that was an amazing movie.  Zefirelli used actors much closer to the ages Shakespeare wrote about (meaning very young rather than actors in their 20s) and because of the way it was filmed made the Bard's words much more meaningful to non-Shakespearean enthusiasts.  At least that is the way I feel.

I agree completely, Freddy. Since I saw the movie in 1968 I have seen stage productions of Shakespeare plays in Seattle, Chicago, Boise, San Francisco, and Ashland, and while most of them were excellent, none matched for me the "realism" of the Zefirelli movie. Shortly after seeing the move, I was fortunate enough to spend a year in Italy, studying and traveling, and I was able to spend some time in Verona, where it was easy for me to imagine the very young star-crossed lovers following their destiny.

I love the long-haired horses and cows of Scotland.
