Turning of the Larch - Fall in my backyard

Marko and ShadowsDad, don't misunderstand, where each of you lives is strikingly beautiful and I do enjoy visiting.  I also like getting away from the big city for a little while but I always love returning home.  On Tuesday, I'm going to Buffalo to visit a friend.  He actually lives in the country, about 25 miles from downtown Buffalo.  The village he lives in is something out of a Norman Rockwell print and, especially in autumn, I love walking around it.  There is a lovely little creek (morbidly known as Murder Creek for some reason) and a beautiful waterfall in the county park that is within the village.  Fortunately, though, in the nine days I'll be there, my friend will be taking me into Buffalo a few times for my big city fix.

Marko, as for the Chargers, as far as I'm concerned Los Angeles can have them.  When are people going to realize that major league sports is nothing more than big business and these teams play cities off of each other to build them new stadiums all the time.  That is definitely not where I want my tax money going.  These are profit making organizations and that is the only reason they are around so let them build their own darn stadiums.  (Freddy now steps off of soapbox and goes off to prepare dinner. )

Freddy, I didn't know the Chargers were moving to LA, or at least threatening to if the city doesn't buy them a new stadium. Same old story - I say let em go too. Have you noticed that one sporting contest is pretty much like another? One team wins one team loses and there's a bunch of milling about leading up to it. Now horse racing is another story. I love watching the races, not gambling just watching those beautiful animals do their thing.

I too much prefer some open space although my career has caused me to spend more time living in and around cities.

Brian, one of the greatest summers of my life was spent in Maine. I was mainly on Bear Lake as a hub but basically "bummed" around the entire state- in fact, I turned 21 in Portland.

Beautiful state, one very special to me and I plan on heading back with my wife one of these days (I was there long before we met).

Thanks for that information, Brian. I certainly like that explanation way more than what keeps popping into my mind.

By the way, Maine is the only New England state I have never been to and it is a regret of mine. I sincerely hope to get there someday.

FWIW, our Larch are losing their needles now and the wind is depositing them on our vehicles. They get everywhere.

For those who don't know Larch (aka hackmatack) lose all of their needles every autumn even though they are a conifer. When winter gets here they are as bare as a deciduous tree.

Yeah if you're out in the woods in the spring and you're searching for deadwood to build a fire you'll soon find out that that dead looking tree is a larch and it isn't going to easily break off for burning.

Wow. Simply stunning photos. And I thought New England was beautiful in the fall.
