Lately I've been traveling with a Gillette Guard (not the SkinGuard) cartridge and the Nivea shaving stick to get pretty good shaves on my head and face.

It works quite well for me. Definitely the best shaving cartridge that I've used. It has a single blade, a simple pivot (no spring tension - the head just freely rotates), and no lubrication strips. Unlike most cartridges, you don't have to add pressure to get a close shave with it. So I prefer both the experience of using it and the outcome of the shave over other cartridges. I find it to be especially great for head shaving, and it works well on my face, too. I bought the handle and a few cartridges from eBay a couple years ago, and they were very affordable. Much cheaper than the carts that I find locally in stores. I don't reach for it over my safety razors when I'm at home, but I'd definitely recommend trying it out for travel. 

For those who don't check a bag, why not? I'm just curious.

I always check a bag, even though I don't pack anything larger than a carry-on size. I pack a DE razor with a couple of blades, and a small sample-sized container of whatever soap I want to use. I pack my Timeless bowl, and a smaller badger brush. I use brushless soap sometimes, but much prefer a good brush lathered soap.

The city I live in has been de-hubbed so there are a lot less direct flights and I will not check a bag if I have to change planes-carry on only. Once you have done that and figured out how to live out of one bag, checking luggage seems like a waste of time even if you have a direct flight.

The less I have to interact with the airlines the better. Flying has become miserable.

Time. Personally, it's not worth it for me to spend extra time checking a bag and then waiting for it at the baggage claim at my destination. There's also the risk that checked baggage can get lost.

I travel about once a month for work. I only pack a single carry-on size bag, but I still always check it. I don't like dealing with dragging a bag through connecting airports or fighting for overhead space. I get that there is time savings, though. For shorter overnight trips, I do use a carry-on since I can pack an even smaller bag.

Go on eBay and pick up some Gillette Guard cart razors. They have sufficient throat to not clog. They are sharp to cut whiskers. And tsa lets me carry them. Most often I just suds up my cheeks with hotel soap and shave away.

There is Noxzema cream, which is wonderful to use for both as a pre shave or a shave cream and does not need a brush to apply it... not easily available Stateside these days for some reason even online.
Also a disassembled Tech has been fine thru the TSA checks... in an adverse event does not put one too much out of pocket and a tuck of blades can be got at a local CVS around
