I have a question for the DFS collective brain trust.

But before I begin a little background. I am a scientist. I notice things. My wife says I am ADD and pay attention to minutia. Be that as it may, that is my background.

More background pertinent to the question. I work in a large building filled with labs and offices as well as a large cafeteria. It is a lovely place to work with functional HVAC, lots of windows and close to the parking garage. It's one flaw is a dearth of bathroom facilities.

There is one on my floor. It is near the cafeteria and sees a lot of use.
It has three wall urinals.

The urinals, like most now days, is limited water volume use. There is a small amount of water in the drain. By my estimate no more than 2 inches in diameter.

I have noticed that just about 8 percent of the users pee directly into the drain making quite a bit of noise. The wall urinal is about 18 by 24 inches with an area of 432 inches. Yet that 8 percent aim for the tiny 2 inch diameter.

Mind you this is all anecdotal. Just data collected casually during my visits. I do not sit there with a counter and calculator. I am sure such a precise approach would yield a different data set.

I never really though about this before. I, like most other users apparently, just pee into the urinal hitting the wall, sides or bottom. The "splashers" need to aim for that 2" circle of water. I wonder why.

Any one have any insight to offer?

Phil, this is AWESOME and deserves an answer. I would favor the quiet approach as it leaves more freedom to choose a target. Thus it seems obvious to me that the smartest, best looking, and best grounded would choose "silent" mode. Splashers are likely the populations evil doers. I can't imagine what HR would do should they find a clean-shaven scientist with a go pro and a stop watch in the men's room. ( love your posts buddy)

I don't aim for the water because I don't want pee splashing back on me. And BTW, I saw the word "tinkle" in the title and it made me cringe a little. Men don't tinkle, lol. Wink

I'm with Jeff on this one. I tend to aim for the sides so that the 'splash' gets deflected AWAY from me. Never in the middle.

FWIW, I think people aim for the middle precisely because it's just something to naturally aim for.

I confess that I aim for the water because I just like the noise. It makes me think of a Roman water fountain...

I'm an aim for the wall guy just so long as I don't splash myself or get my shoes. I'm a fan of the old school urinals that go to the floor but you usually have to go to older buildings for that, except....Costco. Yup they got that part right, old school urinals.

And thanks churchilllafemme , without this thread the rest of us would never have known. Its the sound effects.

Further along the lines of toilet habits, I learned form a recent article that the Germans have a word for a man who sits to urinate. Trust the Germans, they have a word for everything. The word is Sitzpinkler, and it has un-masculine connotations. Here's an article describing how a German Court upheld a man's right to urinate standing up.

Another of my favourite German words is Backpfeifengesicht - translates to "a face badly in need of a fist" or a punch. Seriously, who doesn't know people like this? Canada's Prime Minister for example.

Here's a list of German words for which we need english equivalents

I’m often amazed at the amount of urine drops on the floor around urinals. That’s another matter I’d like more insight on, as I don’t quite understand why it’s such a common occurrence. Perhaps it’s somehow linked to Phil’s original question about aim…

I aim for the sliding action so that it makes no noise or splash, but I also learned to whiz kneeling when I was in the military so that it wouldn't make noise that could get people killed.

I must confess that I sit after first getting up. But that's because it can take many minutes to drain the kidneys before the saw palmetto has kicked in and shaken the prostate awake. Aging is the pits.

Yeah, urine misses (drips) suck. I wonder what the excuse is for missing? Who wants to walk in anothers urine? Mat' I always assumed it was done by folks with a "yea me and screw you" attitude. I bet they don't miss the bowl at home. I would hope they don't.

That may explain it much of the time — whether they’re deliberately spraying their yellow matter all over the place, or because they’re just oblivious to what they’re actually doing.

My “favorite” is when someone walks up to the station next to me, plants his feet firmly apart and then leans up against the wall with one hand or even both, like there’s an earthquake about to happen. I know it’s probably just a balance thing, but I’m always ready to see them push out a baby or something, because the stance is just so serious.

That cracked me up. But HR will not get the chance as I consider this research project closed. Smile

I chose "tinkle" intentionally as an attempt at discretion.

churchilllafemme
Funny, I never think of the Tivoli Fountain when using the facilities Smile

So we had 8 respondents with one aiming for the water. That is 12.5% for our small sample set. Close enough to my 8% observation.

All in all an informative thread.
