If using a spine backed blade listen for the audio response from the blade. It'll talk to you when the angle is right. That's missing with other SE razors in my experience. I find that putting the head flat against the skin and increasing that angle a hair to be optimum.

BTW, I didn't write that I couldn't get a good shave out of an injector, only that I couldn't get along with them. They shave great, they just don't discuss it with me during the shave. I want that discussion from my razor.

Victor SEs sure are chatty. I have pretty tough hair so even injectors are decently loud while shaving, heck even a DE speaks to me, depending on the razor that is. The SE noise is like no other, quite satisfying if I do say so myself.

I'm going to go slowly and carefully on the first few shaves until I get the hang of the Mongoose. Once I'm confident with that, I'll move on to the vintage razors. Is there a consensus on whether short strokes or long ones work better with the Mongoose/Feather combination?
I guess that would be preference. I use short strokes along the jaw and chin, but longer ones on the cheeks and neck. You will just have to enjoy the journey and figure it out. When you do get to the vintage SEs that take a Gem style blade, I recommend making your lather with just a little more water than usual to ensure it is slick as can be. Of course you don't want to drown it but use enough to make it nice and slick, even if it means it will be a bit thinner. That's what helped me get great SE shaves, YMMV though

whiteboy_cannon ShadowsDad Great advice, thank you!

And I don't know why I was so tentative.

My better half shocked me today with a gift of a Mongoose Batch 3. She saw me searching around for one awhile ago and wanted to surprise me, so got one and gave it to me for the 4th of July. I'm still floored.

Anyway, I decided to shave with it this morning, put in a Feather AC Pro, and went carefully, as I suppose is good sense with any razor.

Found the angle with no issues-put the head flat against the face, increased the angle a bit, as ShadowsDad mentioned, and as I would with the first time with a DE razor, and was pleasantly surprised.

Halfway through the first pass, I felt a bit of drag, decided to hydrate the lather a bit more (Seville), and that did the trick. So, I hear you, whiteboy_cannon , thank you.

I intended only to do one pass, but it was so comfortable, I did an across the grain. Still very comfortable. I did some touch up, some diagonally against the grain and rinsed my face to find a BBS.

Alum test passed with flying colors-almost no burn at all. Zero irritation, no nicks, etc. Superb shave.

SWMBO (which after this shocking gift might be changed to She Who Must Be Worshipped) thought the shave was great, and was so proud that she got me something that I am so excited about.

Very early for comparisons, but it did take a bit more attention than the OneBlade which is a no-brainer shaving tool (good news, bad news), but overall my confidence for using Single Edge razors has gone way up this morning.

Thanks to you all again!

P.S. Here's the setup for this morning's shave: Seville, Mongoose, Feather AC Pro, Simpons Chubby 3 Super

What a gift! That's awesome! A little extra water goes a long way in terms of slickness

I'm in!

I only currently have two single edge razors that I recently acquired and have been working in to my rotation.

The Above The Tie Bamboo SE1 and the King Cobra.

I really enjoy both razors and am starting to get the proper feel for both of them. I would like to buy more SE razors in the future. Have been keeping my eyes on the Razorock Hawk!
