I am afraid to ask but - what about my SE Rolls, the Darwin, The Kamisori and most of all my Schick Band which has been completely ignored in this thread but probably bests them all?
Then there are the Cutthroats which I have been unable to master. Same goes for the Kamisori.
I just can't produce blood fast enough for them.

But I do want to thank everyone.
I just discovered this fabulous thread and have spent most of this afternoon reading everything from the start. I am not finished yet. I don't want to miss anything.

Not difficult at all: 100 bloodless shaves with a samurai-sharpened kamisori.

The Rolls is a wonderful razor that will give great shaves, but has the maintenance requirements of a straight razor. It also can't be easily maintained with the supplied stone and strop, at least in my experience. But with a few add ons it can be maintained by anyone who can maintain a straight.

I'm currently looking for the "journal" I posted on another forum chronicling what I did. I'll be back with more (I hope).

I too love the Rolls. I have 14 of them. But getting the blades reset is a problem. I am trying, not very successfully, to learn how to do it.

I had a Rolls Viceroy in the late 50's and up until 1963 when Rolls opted for washing machines instead of razors.
However I came back to them with a vengeance 6 years ago when I discovered Wet/Traditional shaving and how inexpensive the Rolls and others were on the internet.
The inability, however, to find someone to reset the blades set me off on a single edge love affair.
I am still enamoured of all those little miracles.

I hope this is the post where I explain my journey with the Rolls. Basically I used a variation of the Scary Sharp sharpening method. It uses abrasive paper on a piece of glass, no stones and such. OK, I also used Rolls strops with diamond and such.

Have a few questions for you guys:

1. Do you take the blade out and clean each time? As these blades last longer than DE, I would assume we have to do so, since there isn't any other way I can think of to get rid of all the water.

2. Is there any video or pictures showing the proper blade loading mechanism. Even after my first shave, I am not sure I loaded the blade properly. I found a video (Paul H), I think I loaded the blade correctly.

3. I saw that I can get 200 blades from Ted Pella. Is there any other place I can get those PTFE coated blades in a lower quantity? 200 is a big number.

Hi @"iamsms" I'm don't know if you saw this thread a while back on removing the blade after each shave. Its not specific to SE razors but I think the rationale would be the same regardless of SE or DE.

Before that thread I did not remove the blade after every shave but now I do. I guess you're never too old to learn new tricks

I have two SE razors which are loose. They were sent to me by PIF.

Can they be used as is? Can they be repaired?

What make(s) are the razors?
Are they complete?
Anything broken or bent?
Could we see some photos?

It sounds like they may be Valets.

PM', I think it's Walgreens that has the GEM SS ptfe blades in possibly a 10 pack. CVS has the carbon steel GEM blades and they will rust if not attended to after the shave.

Me? I use the GEM SS blades from Ted Pella and the 100 packs from Connaught Shaving. I do nothing after the shave and I get oodles of great shaves per blade. Only once have I gotten fewer than 20 shaves and most times over 20, sometimes over 30 shaves and I change the blade out of boredom. But one caveat about the SS blades... I use them for the first few shaves in a milder razor to tame them a bit. Then I can put them in the more (most?) aggressive razors. I never had to do that with the carbon steel versions but they also didn't last as long for me and I absolutely hate daily minor maintenance.

Also should I maybe but some type of oil in there as well as a drop down into the dial mechanism. Something like what comes with electric clippers for a little lubrication and rust prevention. Oil will just gum things up and eventually it'll turn to varnish given enough time. The mechanisms are designed to work with soap and water only. If you must, treat it with a good detergent to clean things up.
