The Origin of the Wolfman WR-1 Gaps ?

Thanks for sharing these posts with the info everyone. I was trying to remember some of these details because I tried a few early WR1, no prototypes but the last one was a newer "high gap" for that time. The bummer was at that time I was so into OC razors and I got to try these WR1 razors with an open comb guard. It would've been interesting to know what I would've thought if I had only used the closed comb safety bar version of the 0.61, 0.68 and 0.74. The were really smooth shavers but I didn't find them aggressive enough because back then, I was really into using the R41. Not as much my thing anymore but I would like to get another Wolfman sometime like a WR1 that would be a bit bigger gap than the Razorock stainless DLC Lupo. That was one of the best razors I ever had but not a lot of Wolfman users have seemed to rely to my question relating the two razors. I'm thinking I would like something like a WR1 TI closed comb 0.67 or something bigger gapped.

If you want a big gap in a WR1 the .94 is about it AFAIK. I've got one in DC and it is plenty aggressive while being smooth if you have the skills.

Not assuming you don't, but just that it isn't a beginner's razor IMO. I've also got an .86 OC in WR1 and it is also plenty aggressive. The .80 is kind of more blade forward than the .74, and the .61 wasn't enough juice for me. I've never tried a .67.

Do you find an OC of the same gap to be more aggressive/efficient than the SB ?

Some say it is like moving up a gap from the SB of the same gap. Some say it makes no difference.

If I could tell I wouldn't ask but the answer eludes me as much as I try to 'feel' the difference. 

I had a BBS-1 JimmyH and I think the blade feel or exposure was more than what I needed. I much prefer how a Lupo feels on my skin, milder, yes, but still efficient. If a Lupo is supposedly a 0.61 WR1 copy, I think I could go a bit more gap. Not afraid of a 0.94 but not sure what the best gap for me is. Generally I try to do a 2 pass and hope not to have to do a complete third. The BBS-1 was really quick to get the job done but again, something a bit less bitey as far as the blade is concerned will help me.

The BBS-1 is 1.00 gap, and essentially a WR-2 with a thinner top cap. I think the blade angle is different as well. In WR-2 I've gone 1.15, 1.25, 1.35, and 1.55. All are good shaves believe it or not. 

Anyway .... I think the WR-1 0.74 is a great gap for comfort and efficiency. Just on my particular face/neck.

JimmyH I would assume you're right or at least in the ball park. Like I said, this was the biggest "new" gap at the time that I order the WR1 OC in stainless. It was great but too bad I hadn't somehow ended up with a DC or CC, even on accident. Anyways, it works out. The BBS-1 got even use over the course of 5-6 years. James was nice when he let me chat with him on instagram. I told him I would like to support him and get another one of his razors in the future.

I missed this thread last summer. Very interesting. I bought a WR1 back 7 or 8 years ago I think.  It was right at the time James closed his wait list. I was one of the last few in under the wire. As mentioned earlier, nobody talked about blade gaps at the time so took what was offered. I never specified and James never offered gap options. I got a dual comb variant, SB/OC and it cost around CDN$200 with a stand all in mirror polish. It was then and still is the most beautiful razor I’ve ever owned. It’s also one of the more efficient/aggressive razors I own. I’m happy with the blade gap and couldn’t see getting a bigger gap.

That handle at the top of it, just under the head, looks different to me than a standard WRH2 ... anyway ... beautiful razor ! My guess is you have a 0.61 gap since that was what he used to classify as standard back then.

Since then I think I've seen 1.65, and maybe more.

To me, looks like more a circus.

.86 = 0.25mm EFFICIENT
.80 = 0.17mm
.74 = 0.17mm
.67 = 0.10mm
.61 = 0.10mm STANDARD GAP
.54 = 0.10mm
.48 = 0.02mm MILD

Gap / exposure. All positive.
Actually, with 0.25mm of blade exposed ... It's like a shavette.
I don't know what is with 1.85 gap.

I'm taking advantage of this thread coming back to life ,as I want to purchase the WR1 .94. Does anybody know what blade exposure the WR1.94 has and if it's smaller or near the exposure of the 1st generation Charcoal Goods Level 3?
The Charcoal Goods it's my absolutely favorite razor and I want to find "that one" razor that comes near its specifications and way it shaves.

So if you followed this thread from the beginning ... James Dufour used vintage Gillettes to guide him in blade gaps. Above the Tie has a blade gap comparison, which is helpful if you've had experience with the examples they use to illustrate the gaps.

I've got a WR1 0.94 DC and it is quite efficient. I have CG Lvl 3 in SB, and OC, and the 0.94 WR1 is comparable. I never consciously compared one with the other while shaving, so I can't draw a firm conclusion beyond either will get you where you want to go.
