The Kabrand Open Comb Experience

I just acquired this lovely Kabrand Open Comb:[Image: 20150824_220355.jpg]
It's silver plated and has grooves in the cap above the teeth:[Image: 20150824_220429.jpg]
The base plate has a "bat wing" kind of comb and it weighs in at 61g: [Image: 20150824_220445.jpg][Image: 20150824_220514.jpg]
So I know Kabrand is a French manufacturer more famous for straights and also for a slant where the entire head is at a diagonal to the handle but what about this model?
I'm not sure what metal the silver plate is applied to but it definitely doesn't feel like brass.
I also wonder when this razor was made and how it's going to shave.

I've now just put a blade in the Kabrand and not only is there the vast blade gap that was expected but also differential aggression - one side has much more blade exposure than the other giving the head an aggressive side and a (relatively) mild side.
My bakelite Souplex Double Six has exactly the same geometry and I guess this was the way to go with safety razors in the 1930's:[Image: 20150824_224044.jpg]

Shaved with the Kabrand this morning and it's full of surprises! [Image: 20150826_101020.jpg]There's a lot of play with the blade alignment so you can get equal blade exposure on both sides of the head, and in spite of the big blade gap the Kabrand gives a mild shave due to the large extension of the comb.
I had a very smooth gentle shave

Very cool looking razor. I've also seen a straight straight marked "Kabrand Solingen" before. Perhaps they contracted or the brand was acquired by a German company at some point.

I've had one of those razors (or a clone). As you found, it's pretty mild. I didn't actually mind the mildness, but the shave was unspectacular.

Still, I like trying these off-beat razors.

I would have done a series on these razors, but unfortunately I sold most of my crazy razors before the move to WA. Once I get my hands on a few more interesting razors, I will probably do a series of posts on them.
