I know I stated this before but when I started wet shaving one billion years ago tallow really was king. I suppose there have always been good veg soaps around but even as short as two years ago tallow remained most assuredly #1. I appreciate DanLaw's post about his ethical reasons and would guess they may have more to do with lots of soap makers working on veg soaps recipes than any shortcomings of tallow. Hey, I grew up following cattle on horseback and still just a little bit gain some income through the beef business. I feel that if we eat beef then a natural and logical use of the animals tallow would be in soap. I have no problems with that. BUT most of us haven't been involved in the industry and few of us want to think about the life that was offered so we can eat a porterhouse. Furthermore, I know it is repugnant to some to slather saponified animal fats upon ones face. If I were a Soaper and could please a tallow man AND not offend a anti-tallow man, then it would only make sense to ditch the tallow and embrace the veg oil soaps. I will say, at the start of this move from tallow to veg many soaps I tried were abysmal and many still are but there are many that this tallow fan could not identify any difference in. Good tallow=good veg. For the record though the change that Haslinger made from tallow to veg was a noticable downgrade on my face. Was it a good business move for them? I don't know. I hope so. But I have no desire to buy Haslinger any more. The OP makes or made both tallow and veg and for the love of Pete I don't see the difference and all are top shelf performers. there is a strong tallow preference in his Sir Henry's Sandalwood however. . Great veg soaps are MdC, Caties Bubbles, PAA CK6, PdP, well shoot, the list is long.

FWIW, I read there is a difference between vegan and non-tallow, not that it makes any difference to me.

The best non-tallow soaps I have used are from Sudsy Soapery, Catie's Bubbles and the Italian 3P. Sudsy Soapery non-tallow shaves better than 99% of tallow soaps IMO. I buy for shave performance first and scent secondarily. Nothing beyond that interests me.

I noticed the same thing and feel the same way.
