+1. Old soap and old scents are superior by a LARGE margin (IMHO). I sure hope Ryan brings them back. B&M offers different formulations as does CRSW. There is an opportunity to do the same.

If he ever does I'm buying a bunch of them. I LOVED the hard soap. As for this soft type soap, Midnite & two is the only one for me. It's heads and tails above everything else in this category...but to be fair to T&S the scents of the new stuff are not anything close to what I enjoy, so my overall impression may be soured

Hey gents,

The few comments here about guys preferring the old soap base are the only ones I’ve read so far, and one is because he prefers hard soaps. (I’m still struggling to figure out why the hardness of an unlathered soap is at all important. Our new formula is about 15% softer than our old). The new formula is really better in every way in my opinion, and that’s what you will read mostly among reviews online.

Scents - well of course they are subjective. Our new scents are more bold and unique than our previous ones. Someday we may bring some back as an LE, but we won’t ever bring back our old soap base. The new line is selling better than our old line.

Cheers

I agree with Ryan. I've got the old T+S (which I love) and the new (which is more interesting to me). The hardness of the soap doesn't matter to me. I love Tabac and I Coloniali, for example, which are both hard soaps, and modern T+S and L&L, which are both softer. The lather is what counts. The Maya and Himalaya are both amazing scents to my nose.

Yeah, unlathered it doesn't make a difference (duh?). Why would it? I find that the harder artisan soaps are easier to load the brush. You can really "load it like you hate it". The softer ones like L&L or B&M Reserve require an adjustment of technique to load the brush properly (a little more initial water, less pressure). Once figured out, they yield amazing lathers though. Another downside is that you'll blow through that soft soap a lot faster too.

I initially thought the soap base was a bit too soft but that's really pulling hairs. On further use (not a full month) the new soap base might be the finest made today. With continued use the post shave has become my number 1 and the scents out of the tub are just that, scents. They really open up when lathered and develop beautifully. The old one was good but this base provides a superior post shave. There are some great ones out in the wild these days....GroomingDept, Talbot, Midnight, Turtleship to name a few but one would be hard pressed to find a better ingredient list.

I would like to amend my previous post. I wrote that I find the old scents to be "superior by a LARGE margin." To be fair, I have only tried two of the current scents. Morocco was too smokey for my taste. I currently own West Indies. I wish the wild orange and coconut were more prominent. I have yet to try the other three scents.

I am in the minority regarding my preference for the old formulation. It has nothing to do with hard vs soft soap. For whatever reason I prefer the old version. But, now I am beginning to question myself. I think I will use West Indies this morning.

What scent should I try next? I am open to suggestions.

Hi Mark,

Maya has become a favorite. Cocoa, coffee, allspice and then the citrus does actually shine through. It's a nice one!

Time to eat crow. Just finished up with WI. Ryan provided some lathering tips. The result was an abundance of creamy lather. Great cushion and slickness. Very pleased with the result.
